Transferring your Google Workspace subscription to a partner

By the Google Migrations team · Updated · 3 min read

Transferring your Google Workspace subscription to a partner changes who bills and supports you. It does not move or touch your email, files, or settings. A super admin typically starts the process in the Admin console and shares a transfer token with the partner, who then completes the transfer. Your users usually notice nothing at all.

What changes when you transfer to a partner?

The billing and support relationship changes, and almost nothing else does. After the transfer:

  • The partner bills you instead of Google charging your card.
  • The partner becomes your first point of contact for license and billing questions.
  • License changes, edition upgrades, and plan changes go through the partner.
  • Your invoice may combine licenses with other services the partner provides.

If you are still deciding whether a partner is right for you, read buying Google Workspace through a partner first. For background on editions and billing, see the Google Workspace plans and licensing guide.

What stays the same?

Your data, users, and settings stay exactly as they are. A transfer is a change to the subscription record, not a migration. That means:

  • Email keeps flowing, and no MX or DNS changes are needed.
  • Files in Drive and shared drives stay in place with the same sharing.
  • Users keep the same passwords and sign-in steps.
  • Your Admin console settings, security policies, and groups are untouched.
  • You keep super admin access to your own account.

Because nothing moves, there is no cutover window to schedule and no user training needed. You can do a transfer in the middle of a normal workweek.

A transfer is also separate from any migration you have planned. If you are moving more users or another domain into Google Workspace later, that work is scheduled on its own. Our migration plans and process page explains how a managed move works.

How does the transfer process work?

The transfer usually takes a few steps on your side and a few on the partner's side. Google updates its screens from time to time, so your partner should walk you through the current version. The general flow looks like this:

  1. Confirm who holds super admin access and that they can sign in.
  2. Review your current edition, billing plan, license count, and renewal date.
  3. In the Admin console, the super admin generates a transfer token for the partner.
  4. Share the token with the partner through a secure channel.
  5. The partner uses the token to accept the transfer and set up your plan.
  6. Check the Admin console to confirm the partner now manages billing.
  7. Confirm that direct charges from Google have stopped.

If you have not used the Admin console much, our guide to Google Workspace Admin console basics shows where billing and subscriptions live.

What should you check before you transfer?

Check your plan terms and account access before you start, because those cause most delays. A short checklist:

  • Super admin access. Make sure at least two people can sign in as super admin.
  • Plan type and commitment. Know whether you are on an annual or Flexible plan, and ask the partner how your current term carries over. See annual vs Flexible plans.
  • Open balances. Settle any outstanding charges with Google.
  • Add-on subscriptions. List any extras, such as Google Voice, so they are included in the transfer plan.
  • License count. Use the move as a chance to right-size your licenses before the partner sets up billing.
  • Pricing in writing. Get a quote that shows license costs and any service fees separately.

Frequently asked questions

Will our users have downtime during the transfer?

No. A transfer changes the billing relationship, not the service. Email keeps flowing, files stay where they are, and nobody needs to sign in again. Most users never know a transfer happened unless you tell them.

Can we move back to Google direct billing later?

Generally, yes. You can move a subscription from a partner back to Google, or on to another partner. Your data stays in place each time. Check how your plan term and renewal date are handled before you move, so the change does not create a billing gap.
