Business Standard vs Business Plus

By the Google Migrations team · Updated · 3 min read

Choose Business Standard if your team needs shared files, recorded meetings, and plenty of storage. Choose Business Plus if you need Google Vault for retention and eDiscovery, more storage, or meetings of up to 500 people. Standard gives 2 TB of pooled storage per user and 150-person calls. Plus gives 5 TB pooled per user and 500-person calls.

What does Business Plus add over Business Standard?

Business Plus adds Google Vault and eDiscovery, more storage, and larger meetings. Both editions are capped at 300 users and include the same core apps.

Prices are list prices as of October 2026. Google also lists additional security and device management controls for Business Plus. Those lists change, so review Google's current comparison for the specific controls you care about. When do you need Google Vault?

You need Google Vault when you have to keep email and files for a set period, place data on hold, or search and export it for a legal or regulatory request. Vault lets an admin:

  • Set retention rules for Gmail, Drive, Chat, and other services.
  • Place legal holds on specific users or accounts so data cannot be purged.
  • Search across your organization's data and export results for review.
  • Keep an audit trail of who searched for what.

If none of that applies to you today, Business Standard is usually enough. If it might apply soon, plan the move to Plus before you need it, because retention only protects data from the moment it is in place. Vault is not a backup tool, so keep that in mind as you plan. It preserves and finds data for legal and policy purposes, and restoring deleted items for everyday use works differently. Our guide to Google Vault retention and eDiscovery basics explains how to set it up.

Do regulated organizations need Business Plus?

Not always, but many regulated organizations find Vault useful enough to justify Plus. The edition is only one part of the picture. For HIPAA, Google signs a Business Associate Agreement for covered services, and compliance depends on how you configure and use Google Workspace, not on the edition name alone.

Confirm your obligations with your compliance officer or counsel before you choose. Then match the edition to the controls you actually need. Our guide Is Google Workspace HIPAA compliant? covers the questions to ask, and our HIPAA setup page explains how we configure accounts for healthcare teams.

Is the price difference worth it?

The price difference is worth it when you would otherwise pay for a separate archiving tool, or when retention and legal holds are a real requirement. Work it out for your team:

  1. Multiply the gap between $14 and $22 by your user count.
  2. List any archiving, eDiscovery, or webinar tools you pay for today.
  3. Ask whether Vault and 500-person meetings would replace any of them.
  4. Consider the cost of not having retention if a dispute or audit comes up.

If the extra cost replaces another tool or covers a clear obligation, Plus usually pays for itself. If you are close to 300 users or need more advanced controls, also read Business vs Enterprise editions. If storage is your only concern, compare against Business Starter vs Business Standard first.

Frequently asked questions

Can we move from Business Plus back to Business Standard?

You can, but plan it carefully. Moving down removes Vault, so retention rules and holds stop protecting data, and items can then be deleted under normal rules. Export anything you must keep and confirm your obligations with your compliance officer or counsel first.

Is Business Plus the same as an Enterprise edition?

No. Business Plus is the top Business edition and is still capped at 300 users. Enterprise editions have no such cap and add more advanced controls. Plus covers many small and midsize needs without the move to Enterprise.
